Tyres keep the car on the ground. The importance of good tyre should never be discounted. Even with top‐notch safety features in place motor accidents can occur if not for a good set of wheels. There is no shortcut around this. Get your tyres changed!
1. Bald tyres can overheat
Tyres that are worn down too much are called bald tyres. Bald tyres have a very little tread left on its circumference. As a result, the rubber of the bald tyre is constantly in contact with the asphalt. This causes relatively more heat build‐up compared to a tyre with good groove depth. A new tyre would have grooves to let the air course through. This cools the tyre. Since a worn‐down tyre does not have treads heat would build up and eventually the tyre can blow out.
2. More likely to puncture
The tread of half worn out or bald tyre would be eroded. Because of this, there is only a little rubber left to act as a buffer between the tyre and the roadway. Running over a
bit of glass or any sharp‐edged debris is going to leave you with a flat tyre. Unexpected burst tyre in the middle of driving can potentially cause in a single‐vehicle collision.
3. There is the risk of hydroplaning
Tread patterns or grooves are designed to prevent hydroplaning. Hydroplaning or aquaplaning is when there is a layer of water beneath the tyre. In half‐worn tyres or in bald tyres grooves are worn out making it difficult for water to flow out from under the tyre. Hydroplaning causes the vehicle to slide through the water on the surface of the road. When this happens the driver might lose control over the vehicle.
4. Tyre wear and under‐inflation
Worn out tyres lose air pressure faster making them under‐inflated. Underinflation further wears down the tyres and thus a vicious cycle ensues. Half‐worn or bald tyres when under‐inflated can cause serious problems to the motorists. With a lower tyre pressure also comes lesser fuel economy. You are likely to experience difficulty in steering. There is also a bigger chance of ending up with a busted tyre.
5. Bald tyres put you at the risk of a tyre burst
Without treads, there is a risk of tyres suddenly blowing out while driving. In a bald tyre, the rubber is more in contact with the asphalt. This would cause the tyres to accumulate more heat and burst. You become more vulnerable if you are driving briskly. Debris from the road can damage a bald tyre more than a new tyre causing the tyre to rupture.
6. Takes longer to brake in the rain
On wet roads, worn‐out tyres take significantly longer to come to a stop once the brake is applied. This was observed even in cars with an anti‐lock braking system (ABS). Taking longer and farther to halt after hitting the brake can even result in a vehicle collision.

Get ready for a safe and trouble-free rainy season - with a good battery and tyres from Autoworld. We’ve been keeping Zambia moving since 1992!
The first rains make the roads extra slippery as the mud and oil on dry roads can combine with the water to form a slippery layer. You’re then likely to experience a loss of control. So be extra careful.
In addition check your tyres:
Tyres should have plenty of tread depth to evacuate standing water from between the road surface and your tyre. If your current tyres are worn down to anywhere near 2.5mm, it’s time to think about replacing your tyres.
Tyre pressures that are too low or too high can lead to reduced traction, premature tread wear, or tyre damage. Check your tyre pressure regularly (at least once a month) to make sure they’re properly inflated
Other safety tips
Slowing down on wet roads is crucial. Wet roads give you less grip, increase your braking distance and reduce your ability to properly steer around obstacles.
Keep a further distance from the car in front of you since braking distances are longer on wet roads. Staying back also keeps you away from the tyre spray of the vehicle in front, giving you better visibility.
Jerky or sudden change in steering direction can lead to loss of control, especially on rain-slicked roads so drive with smoother steering.
Make sure your vehicle can be seen in wet conditions. Turn on your lights and make sure that all of them are in working order.

The John Bean B800P Wheel Balancer
“This sophisticated device is ideal for balancing the wheels of sports cars and any other vehicle that require precision balancing. ”
Faster training, quicker tyre changes
The B800P speeds up the training of new technicians and reduces the time it takes to change a tyre and balance the wheels. The touchscreen interface makes it easy for technicians to check the results. And when the operator touches the imbalance amount, the wheel automatically turns to the correct position for weight placement!
Touchscreen User Interface
This convenient device has commonly used modes such as spoke detection, match mount and manual mode. Measurement results and weight position indicators are clearly visible.
Automatic Balancer Measurement
It takes about 8 seconds for the B800P to identify the optimal location of any imbalance and identify the best location for the clip-on weight.
Patented Automatic Power Clamp
The wheel is electro-mechanically clamped for increased accuracy.
easyWEIGHT
A laser beam pinpoints the positioning of weights in the lower rim position (the B800P's exclusive easyWEIGHT facility).
John Bean B340P wheel balancers are now installed in all other Autoworld branches in Lusaka.
For wheel alignment, Autoworld uses a 3D car wheel aligner that also comes from market leaders John Bean. This is the Visualiner 3D Lite Lift.
Whenever you buy tyres from any Autworld outlet, you’ll get free fitting and a free wheel balancing service (on a John Bean B340P wheel balancer).
Nitrogen air is available for pumping into your tyres (at Impala Service Station only). By inflating your tyres with high purity nitrogen, they will remain at their proper operating pressure much longer.
For auto repair shops, Autoworld sells John Bean B100 model wheel balancers, as well as John Bean Visualiner 3D Lite Lift wheel aligners.

Have you ever been on a long journey and noticed one of your tyres was slightly flat? Have you enjoyed a day at the mall only to find you have a puncture? Your heart may sink further when you realise there are no workshops nearby (especially if you are on a long Zambian road in the middle of nowhere). A flat tyre can be a real pain.
In most cases you will find a puncture is caused by a nail or a foreign object that has engaged itself in the tyre resulting in low pressure. To stay safe and enjoy your trip, we recommend changing your tyres well before the tread gets low. This will help avoid flat tyres altogether. To help you on your way, this month’s 15% off special is on tyres and tubes (from 7th-13th May).
Even with a good tread, a tyre may still sometimes develop a puncture. When this happens, you can ensure you finish your journey safely with the TJM tubeless repair kit and mini compressor which come with an instruction manual and guarantee. Both are small enough to permanently stay in the boot of your vehicle. With the kit you can be equipped for any quick fix regardless of the car you drive.
Nowadays most vehicles run on tubeless tyres. This makes it very easy to repair them without needing to remove the tyre from the vehicle.
Tyres with tubes have a valve protruding from the tube. Tubeless tyres have a tubeless valve which is fitted to the rim of the tyre. Our workshop and sales staff are happy to help you identify the difference so you can establish if the tubeless repair kit is right for your vehicle.
How much will it cost you? At any Autoworld branch you can get the tubeless repair kit for K330* and the mini compressor at an amazing K1,815*.
As a safety measure, consider taking your car to the nearest Autoworld garage once you are able to drive. It's important to have your tyre re-checked by a professional to ensure it is permanently sealed.
